Women demand a voice
No commentsWomen’s rights activists have demonstrated at the UN Climate Change conference in Poznan, Poland demanding more pro-women policies in addressing climate change. The women marched to the conference hall carrying placards saying the climate debate is gender blind. During the march, Lorena Aguilar, Senior Gender Advisor for International Union for Conservation of Nature told crowds of supporters that women are more likely to be killed by natural disasters such as floods, cyclones and heat waves, than have their voices heard. Vision Voice’s Wambi Michael talked to one African protestor to find out the perspective of rural women in Kenya.

Conserve Africa’s indigenous trees
No commentsNobel Peace Prize Laureate, Professor Wangari Maathai is calling on Africans to stop chopping down indigenous forests only to replace them with exotic species such as eucalyptus trees. Maathai, the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace is unhappy that practices in poor harvesting have resulted in the disappearance of the bulk of the indigenous forests. The Kenyan environmental activist has been attending the UN Climate Change Conference in Poznan, Poland. Vision Voice’s Wambi Michael asked Wangari Maathai why she continues to push for the conservation of Africa’s indigenous trees.

Developed countries to pay damages
No commentsOxfam Uganda’s Country Director, Savio Carvalho, is demanding rich countries in the West pay for the climatic damages they have caused to developing countries. The money would be used to assist communities affected by climate change in eastern Uganda, Kasese, Kabale and Rwanzori where the ice is melting. More money needed
No commentsHundreds of billions more dollars are likely to be needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a 2030 target.
