Mike Shanahan

Mike is the press officer at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). He works internally with members of the IIED Climate Change Group on their communications and externally with journalists to support their reporting of climate change. Before joining IIED, Mike was news editor at the SciDev.Net news agency, covering science and developing countries. At SciDev. Net, he both reported on international climate change policy and research, and edited articles on the topic by journalists in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Mike has a PhD in tropical rainforest biology and is the founder of the Research and Media Network, an online social network for journalists, science communicators and others to improve the communication of research findings.

In the corridors of the conference hall in Durban there are signs that the climate change talks are starting to gain some traction. However the Green Climate Fund is being held hostage by the USA as a bargaining chip for a weaker roadmap. Small nations however are looking out from under their G77 and China negotiating umbrella group and turning away from China and India to demand a speedier track, and the EU may take the moral high ground and support that approach. There is also a suggestion that the Kyoto Protocol be extended, until all industrialised nations are in agreement. Are we witnessing a change in how countries define themselves in relation to climate change in Durban? The issue of speed may now define a country’s position in climate change rather than economics or geography.
