Cecilia Rosen

Cecilia Rosen Ferlini is based in Mexico City. She was a Science reporter/investigator for the National University in Mexico 2003-2007. Since 2007 she has worked as a science reporter for Science Section at Reforma Newspaper. She has been covering climate change since 2004, and wrote her degree thesis on how mexico and foreign newspapers cover climate change issues. She collaborated with Javier Crúz, one of the Mexico’s most talented science journalists, on research and journalism tasks.

Carbon and biodiversity related says new UN atlas

There is a major overlap between biodiversity richness and carbon stocks, according to a new atlas published by the United Nations Environmental Programme and launched at the climate summit. It aims to help negotiators assess the benefits of a new strategy for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation otherwise known as REDD. The atlas says that less carbon emissions and more biodiversity conservation can be achieved by reducing deforestation and making more protected forest zones.

Forest negotiations advance at climate summit

Negotiations to combat deforestation and its impacts on climate change advanced quickly in UN climate talks this week in Poland, but not without controversy. Country negotiators agreed on a draft strategy known as Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD). Proponents of REDD hope a deal on deforestation can be nailed down next year in Copenhagen, where country negotiators will seek an agreement to succeed the 1997 Kyoto protocol. It is estimated that that as much as 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions comes from forest clearing.
